History

The Desert Weavers began with two people getting together.

Mrs. Lucy Galbraith, who was doing some weaving, learned that Mrs. Mary Stone had been weaving since 1935. The two ladies got together for discussion and mutual help. Others joined in for monthly meetings in 1947.

The Desert Weavers had an exhibition, demonstration, and program at the Heard Museum Auditorium April 23, 1948.

The dues for the 29 members at the 1951 meeting were $1.50 and officers were first elected in that year.

In 1973 the Desert Weavers changed their name to the Arizona Desert Weavers and Spinners Guild because the Guild now included not only weaving but also other fiber arts.

At our regular meetings, educational programs are presented and guest speakers are featured. Workshops by nationally recognized artists are held each year. The Guild also continues to demonstrate at the Arizona State Fair, which we
have done since 1951.

The Arizona Desert Weavers and Spinners Guild offers unlimited opportunity for learning and enjoying the company of people with like interests.
